Alternatives to HEAT2D

edited August 2023 in General

I'd like to start a simple discussion on alternatives to well known software - software missing from the https://alternativeto.net/ website (which I think is a great resource)

Once we have some alternatives we can add them to the https://alternativeto.net website

So, what are good alternatives to THERM & Heat2 / Heat3 for thermal analysis @Cyril ?

  • Based on the live chat, I heard Energy2D http://energy.concord.org/energy2d/ being mentioned as an alternative. I think it was also mentioned that sparelizard could be modified for this purpose.

  • Thanks, I've added it to the directory and let some colleagues know.

  • I made the page here Energy2D on the wiki notice that it is under new stewardship.

When I used Energy2D many years ago it was a teaching tool not usable for actual work. OpenFOAM can be an open source alternative to Therm (using the chtMultiregionFoam solver) but lacks interface. If you are looking for commercial 2D or 3D tools to calculate thermal bridges there are a number of tools to choose from. Most of them surprisingly expensive.

  • @Max that might be a reason why we should support development of a new user friendly Energy2D
I've tried to install it and get this far:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Can't load library: /usr/lib/jvm/java-17-openjdk-17.0.8.0.7-1.fc38.x86_64/lib/libawt_xawt.so

    Any ideas?

  • The installer works fine under Windows. Fun program to play with.
@Max I see that it's not a full CFD tool suitable for large and complex projects. Is there some other reason why it's not suited to real world studies? I feel like for detail studies it's perfect - not for whole building studies.
