Work around for a destructive extrude type of workflow

Vanilla Blender question: I know Blender doesn't have destructive extrude yet, but how would you go about to 'quickly' create door inset, like the following video illustrates.

  • The quickest I know of is selecting the faces on both sides, use inset, then bridge edge loops. Both faces need to be the same size or the inset edges will not coincide. You can always tweak it after the fact but it's more manual work.
