BlenderBIM going agnostic from OCCT?

edited August 2024 in General

Hi,
@Moult said in the BlenderBIM rebranding :

We outgrow existing solutions and slowly swap out with our own tailored tech. Here are some examples :
OpenCASCADE to kernel agnostic (now CGAL + OCC + potentially more)

Can you tell us a little more about this please? We're currently looking at OCCT for Speckle

  • OCCT is fantastic for complex implicit geometry, but not so fantastic at explicit mesh-like geometry is my understanding. IfcOpenShell's new 0.8.0 architecture means that it has decoupled itself from OCC you can have one, two, or many geometry kernels. So OpenCASCADE is one kernel, but you can also pick CGAL. In the future, we may offer more (e.g. Manifold). You can also combine kernels e.g. some objects use one kernel and some objects use other, or use one kernel and if it fails, fallback to another.
