Geolocation Management of IFC Files in Bonsai

Hello, I need support for a project in Revit. I am modeling some buildings based on a linked CAD plan. In this model I need to insert some IFC files, but they do not contain a geographic reference.
So, after importing them into Revit, I manually move them to the correct position and then re-export them. However, after exporting, the files become much heavier and difficult to manage.
To overcome the problem I decided to try using Bonsai, loading the IFC files there. However, I do not know how to proceed to achieve my goal: load the file, move it to the correct coordinates (rectilinear coordinates in meters) of the project and save it.
(this is because then I want to upload the correctly positioned IFC file into Trimble. I hope I'm in the right place, sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks.

  • Hi @azazza95 here you can find useful informations
    https://docs.bonsaibim.org/guides/authoring/georeferencing.html
Btw, moving the model creates problem because there will be large number in coordinates. So i guess correct georeferencing could be a better solution.

@Massimo is 100% right, no need to move anything, use the Georeferencing feature in Bonsai instead.

You need the projection (EPSG) of your model and the geographic coordinates (Easting, Northing) of your 0,0 point in the IFC model, plus the rotation and height if needed.

my advice is to practice a bit with dummy simple models and see the best option (check if the rotation angle is clockwise or the opposite)

..and use IFC4+ of course ;)

  • Thank you very much for the help guys. I tried doing a test with a simple 5x5 square that is at coordinates 0,0,0 then I manually inserted specific coordinates inside the Projected CRS and Coordinate Operation section. They are project coordinates. I didn't touch all the other values (such as WCS, True North). Then I saved the IFC and tried to insert it inside an IFC viewer (Trimble). The result is that the ifc has coordinates of the local geometry modeled on bonsai and not those inserted by me manually. Maybe I did not pay attention to something trivial. I specify that my E/Northing are coordinates with large values. Thanks

To help you out of dreams. No software out there seems to support IFC georeferencing. Yeah, maybe write the codes in the file but not 'acting like it'. In Trimble you still need to put these values in manually. But it is good practice to do it.

    Apart from Bonsai.. ;)

  • Thanks @steverugi and @magicalcloud_75 the procedure is clear and works as the video. The only problem is that as output I have a link of the model and no longer a geometry. This gives me problems in viewing in IFC viewer, as is Trimble that I referred to before.

Well as far as I have tested Bonsai also does not really support it the way I would expect - for example linking two files with different crs will not work.

as far as I understand all it takes (for a rough georeferencing) is the conversion of the coordinates and rotation of the reference point from its original to the desired CRS, I can do it in QGIS (which converts it on-the-fly)
But surely a conversion tool could be handy, no doubt
