You may constraint a move operation by using
G, then C (constraint) and set the constraint axis the same way than for scale operations (pick origin, then pick direction)

Ok, Nice. I was doing the following...
G, clicking the point, and then C
but, it should be.
G, then C to assign the edge constraint, then pick the point to move.

You may constraint a move operation by using

Double G key will active edge slide mode, which uses a percentage. This is OK for percentage movements, but not if you want to move an absolute value.
If you want to do this accurately, you can use the custom constraints feature. This'll do it: (see 23:33)
