Is de LandXML a "IFC for road work" ???

Anyone have experience with LandXML files? They are truly an "IFC for road work". I am advising the state company that deals with the construction of routes (Vialidada Nacional) and I want to propose that the format that they request in the tenders be the LandXML, but to be sure that it is a solid alternative. Are there LandXLM file viewers? (in the style of Bimcollab for IFC). But the only alternative I see is to request files from Autodesk Civil3D and I want to avoid requiring proprietary files.

  • The LandXML homepage seems to have a freeware viewer: http://landxml.org/ with some open source options: http://www.landxml.org/software/software.aspx

I reckon IFC for infrastructure is still a work in progress and will be for a little while before it trickles down the food chain.

Apparently there was a Blender LandXML importer but I cannot find the add-on but I found a flashy video of it on YouTube: - this makes me assume that we can most likely import this with relative ease into Blender. You can also propose that Blender be used as a viewer to Vialidada Nacional. I reckon building an importer wouldn't take more than a week to give immediate returns (the devil is probably in the details, but most likely LandXML is not like the beast that IFC is).

  • looks like TU-Munich is leader in BIM for Infrastructure.. at least in Germany.

  • I believe the Trails Workbench in Freecad has the ability to import LandXML (or at least it is on the roadmap) https://github.com/joelgraff/freecad.trails
It might be worthwhile asking the Trails workbench developers on the FreeCAD forum for their perspective.
