IFC4 Deleted categories

edited April 2021 in General

I was looking to describe a architectural program using IFC and noticed that the main classes to be used are deleted in IFC4. (IfcSpaceProgram and IfcRelInteractionRequirements). Does anyone know if BSI provides a reason why those classes were deleted and what they advice to use to describe this ? I guess we can use a space to describe a space program, but there is no topological class to describe the link between two spaces. Even IfcRelConnectsElements is too short as it is limited to the description of the connection of two IfcElements, while spaces are IfcProduct (Supertype of Ifcelement) and IfcSpaceElements.

  • Perhaps IfcSpaceProgram can be replaced with IfcSpatialZone with predefined type being OCCUPANCY? Topological links may be represented with IfcRelAssignsToProduct.

Ping @geometrygym - who might have some thoughts on this.

  • According to the definition IfcSpatialZone is a group of IfcSpace but with a different representation. It suits well to appartments for example. So, both IfcSpatialZone and ifcSpace can be used to describe a node of a spatial program.
IfcRelAssignsToProduct could be used (as the type of classes for related object and relating object are not exclusive) but it would be far from definition.
