GSoC 2022 applications now open

edited January 2022 in General

It's another year of GSoC! Mentoring organisations apply from Feb 7 to Feb 21. Coding this year is from June to November.

I really enjoyed it last year. Here's to another successful year? Ping @aothms @yorik and perhaps those who want to introduce it into their academic institutions @topologic ?

I'm not sure why IfcOpenShell isn't listed in the umbrella of OpenCAx on the .org site but hopefully we can get that sorted too :) http://opencax.org/ https://opencax.github.io/

Here's the timeline: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline

  • A colleague in Computer Science suggested the same to me a few weeks ago. I will discuss it with him and see if we can put in an application from Cardiff University to work on Topologic. Have not done anything like that before. Could be fun!

  • @topologic might be worth reaching out to OpenCAx - it might be easier to participate under their umbrella.

  • I'm sure you'll be welcome under the umbrella, @topologic ! IfcOpenShell participated last year, so it should be listed there already, probably just nobody updated the page yet.
GSOC is a nice experience, there is no real "formal" delivery requirement, so students can just work on something, even if it doesn't deliver usable result. The thing to be aware of is that it takes you a couple of hours per week as a mentor to do it properly, and in the openCAX group it is a common rule to have 2 mentors for each student (it is also recommended by google IIRC)

Great. Thank you. Yes, we have a few people with interest and expertise in this. I have contacted them.

  • Yes especially short term it's beneficial to join an existing org, as the chance to be accepted by google and the amount of "slots" you get is more limited for newcomers.

For mentors they do more or less require that they are active contributors to the open source project. For a project new to gsoc I think they will also not want to dedicate too many slots.
