Alternate approaches to include gif/images links in commit messages

edited April 2024 in General

I love @Andrej730 little Imgur gifs or images he posts in his commit descriptions to help explain a feature.

Unfortunately, imgur abandons old content sometimes--so these commit links go broken.

Anyone suggest a more future proof approach to this? Another repo with these gifs? a mastodon account perhaps? blockchain? ;)

Thoughts?

  • The main intention is to illustrate the current changes - so it will be easier to try new feature right away and help testing it, so imgur should work for this purpose. But yes, it would be nice to have some more reliable method to store images. Though haven't seen any dead imgur urls yet.

  • It seems imgur reduced possible gif quality at some point (e.g. see https://imgur.com/a/stlJqwm), looking for an alternative now.

  • How about updating the manual/docs with these gifs? Or is the GUI not stable enough? Somehow related, many detailed workflow descriptions are given on the forum, but without advanced search they are difficult to find back.

  • Committing gifs can make the repository quite heavy, and the interface is still changing at a pace that makes maintaining up-to-date official documentation unsustainable.

  • Found a few alternatives
https://files.catbox.moe/29v40o.mp4 - very good alternative but from FAQ it seems it could be blocked in some countries (https://catbox.moe/faq.php)
https://imgchest.com/p/agyvw9bw948 - has less upload size, 30 mb, but should be enough for most gifs, probably will use this for gifs from now on
