Urban design with freeCAD

edited August 2025 in General

For those who want to use FreeCAD to develop urban proposals, here's an example.

Workflow:

I downloaded the 3D files from OpenStreetMap to construct the urban environment with many important details. I used OSM2World to open the .osm files and export them to .obj files, and Blender to increase the scale from mm to meters (since importing .obj files into FreeCAD doesn't yet have a scale option).

Once all the .obj files were assembled, I drew the proposed buildings in FC on the sites. I used the Render WB to render (with Cycles) only the new buildings and created the final photo montages using Gimp.

The analysis work required extensive calculations of land and building areas, for which I used the spreadsheet extensively. This was very helpful because this area spreadsheet dynamically updated as changes to the project occurred.

I also used orthophotos from the São Paulo City Hall website (GeoSampa) to update the survey of existing buildings.

I am working on the Solar WB and as soon as possible I intend to carry out some solar radiation studies in this project.

Any further questions or need more details about the process, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • I love it !

  • Based on the volumetric analysis, we created the study's 2D sections. In this case, we used the 3D orthographic drawings as a basis for the 2D ones using the FC tools.

Explaining the proposal a little, it is an urban planning assay for areas close to the main rivers of São Paulo, in the face of climate change, offering larger green (permeable) areas with housing (at higher points) integrated with transport, work, public services and leisure. This proposal was presented at the International Urban Planning Seminar.

  • Nice! Thanks for sharing. It's good to see FreeCAD in a real world AEC practice.
