Hi everyone and hi @Moult ,
I just joined this community. My name is Ken and I am a former structural designer, civil engineer, and now a new graduate developer. I came across the GSoC project and saw your guys' projects. Since I am from a similar background, I am very very very interested in some of your guys' projects!! Namely, the IfcTester web app and the web-based UI integration in Blender.
I have tried to reach out to Moult by email or through Linkedin. But didn't succeed. Sorry for the cold email btw!! I am exploring all the related information about those two projects and trying to build up my application. I wonder if I can get a chance to talk with Moult or anyone who works on those projects about things like where we are at and what are the detailed goals. I tried to upload an IFC file to the ifctester. I know ifctester is half-built, so I guess it's normal.

Hey all! A little late but great news, we've been accepted for GSoC 2024!
There are 10 project ideas available here, or you can create your own: https://github.com/opencax/GSoC/issues?q=is:issue+is:open+label:"Project:+IfcOpenShell" . If you'd like to get involved the steps are here: https://opencax.github.io/gsoc_checklist.html and you can reach out at https://osarch.org/chat/

Here's a list of people who have reached out so far. Nobody has yet written any applications, no 1-on-1 discussions, and no patches written.

  • Just a little update on this. I'm thrilled to announce that so far 7 applicants have shared draft proposals and had verbal discussions with me / Vukas on a variety of projects.

If you haven't yet shared a draft application or organised a meetup, now is the time! There is only about a week left to submit your application!

  • Congratulations to all successful applicants! This year, we received 14 proposals and of those, 3 proposals were successful and awarded slots from Google. You can see all the successful proposals under the BRL-CAD umbrella here: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2024/organizations/brl-cad

    The successful proposals were:

    1. Scripts to generate light simulation input files from 3D models by chiragsingh1711
    2. IfcOpenShell: IfcTester WebApp by Kshitij Roodkee
    3. Web-based UI integration with Blender by Ziad Ibrahim

Each of these three proposals are really exciting and will help push the capabilities of IfcOpenShell and the BlenderBIM Add-on even further. The light simulation work will make BBIM unique in the industry in its abilities to generate photorealistic and photometrically accurate luminance renders as well as illuminance studies. The IfcTester webapp will fill a gaping hole in the industry where there is no open source, up-to-date, web-based IDS authoring app. The web-based UI integration will open up new opportunities in using non-Blender UIs alongside the active Blender session, especially for spreadsheets, model coordination and issue management, and 4D/5D capabilities.

    A huge congratulations!

To those who didn't make it, we will be discussing the possibility of running a non-Google-branded IfcOpenShell Summer Of Code mirroring the GSoC programme with our own funding being used as a stipend (at half the GSoC rate).
