FreeCAD - Suggestions for general reorganization of WBs and tools

edited February 26 in General

Hello everyone!

I am proposing a reorganization of the FreeCAD workbenches and tools, and I would like to receive feedback, suggestions and comments.

Here is one of the first illustrations of the ideas:

It is important to highlight for this forum the creation of BIM workspaces, such as (until now):
1. BIM Piping (BIM and Quetzal),
2. BIM Steel Frame (BIM and Quetzal)
3. BIM Concrete Structure (BIM and FreeCAD Ribars)
4. BIM Physical simulation (BIM and FEM)
5. BIM Quantification or Budgeting (BIM and Spreadsheet)
6. BIM 2D drawing and printing (BIM and TechDraw) - below image

Thank you!

Not sure if this is out of scope for your reorganization, but one thing that always bothered me in FreeCAD is the name of the workbench Part Design.
We already have a mostly unrelated Part workbench, the name may see to establish some non-existent relation.
It seems to be focused on operating solely inside Body type of objects in the FreeCAD hierarchy of things, not naming it Body instead seems like a missed opportunity.
It is a short one word name that to me better conveys what it does, or what objects it operates on, and probably reduces confusion for beginners.
Not sure if everyone else shares my view, but maybe this is an opportune moment to introduce that change.

  • I believe that by grouping the workbenches by function (affiliation), this type of doubt can be reduced.
