Learning resources

Hi, im trying out Bonsai for the first time, im already familiar with BIM tools like revit or archicad, for architecture work, im also im very familiar with vanilla blender, i would love to integrate Bonsai in my workflow, but im finding out that the documentation is a bit lackluster so i don't know where to go in order to learn what this addon can do and also its limitations. Any suggestions?

  • Start by looking at what Ifc really is and what it is not as this is central to Bonsai.
    Remember that this is a free and open-source project in alpha, any funding comes from the community, so documentation won't be comprehensive or necessarily up to date but searching this forum is really helpful.
    You will find how-to videos on YouTube by searching 'Blender Bonsai BIM', if you choose to download the 'unstable' builds from Github you'll find things move around on the interface making some of the videos a bit hard to follow.
    Don't try to do it the revit way or the archicad way Bonsai is different in a cool way :)
    and then just start making something

  • I'll just add that the most comprehensive set of tutorials is the ones by @theoryshaw for a modest fee, part of which is fed back as funding to the project.
    See the thread here: https://community.osarch.org/discussion/3030/video-tutorial-series-for-blender-bonsai/p1
    That thread could maybe do with being pinned or something, so that newcomers can find it easily.

  • Also search for IfcArchitect on YT, a bit outdated but always helpful

    @sanOcelotl
    if you just want to test the water I posted a few videos back in Aug 25
    I strongly recommend @theoryshaw 's videos but for a quick tour maybe this videos can be of help.

    I also support @Nigel 's point 100%: understanding IFC is key in Bonsai's learning process, you are able to do authoring directly using IFC schema, something you can only appreciate once compared with other software (spoiler alert: it's much more fun)
    cheers

    PS you can also check Modelflick (by @arunarchitect here) on YouTube, it covers most of the basic features in Bonsai and it's more recent
