Some projects are not clear about their license : https://inkscape.org/about/license/
If there is conflict with the quality of the information in the wiki page of software Directory, we could hide the last column (license) of the list.

Please, no. It is still very useful even if 100% accurate. It is a wiki let’s fix it over time.

Just read that article. Good point. Makes sense to do a cleanup. The first step would be adding a question mark after all GPL-based licenses. That can then be replaced by the relevant "-only" or "-or-later". What a pain.

  • Linux Drawing Viewer (lx-viewer)
    http://lx-viewer.sourceforge.net/
A DXF file viewer. It is very old but it works. For Linux and Windows. Also you can view DWG files using OpenDWG libraries but you need to download them separately, and these libraries have a different license.

The author recently talked on the LibreDWG email list about getting DWG support that way. Hope it works out.
OpenDWG is an old name for Teigha from ODA. Doesn't exist anymore and cannot be accessed for free.

  • Hi,
while I was searchign for FM apps, I found out openMAINT. It says on their website that it is opensource, but for a full package they charge you.
I have tested the trial version, and it seemed quite powerful for facility managemnet tasks. It can also integrated IFC Files, which I sadly could not test...

  • finally I got the confirmation email ! thank you Bitacovir for the invite...
going thru this list i didnt see any MOVIE EDITOR; A must app to have IMHO... my vote is for BLENDER and SHOTCUT

  • @agron did you try download the source and self-host? Is that what you mean by trial?

@rakela I'm a little hesitant - movie editing is a bit of a fringe activity, not really domain specific. Maybe a better solution is to write it on this page? https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title=Open_source_software_beginners (which I think need a big of work done on it)

  • Mesh Align Plus (Blender Addon)

Mesh Align Plus helps you move things around, precisely: arrange objects in your scene, align mesh parts to each other while you're modeling, and create complex custom transformations using measurements from your models.

Do we need a section for reality capture? There's a lot going on.

  • @Moult Thank you much for that link ! first time in there and all good, dont ask me how i got to a very
complete list of movie editors which included Blender, Shotcut, etc. good deal, thx

    Estru3D https://sourceforge.net/projects/estru3d/
GNU General Public License version 3.0 (GPLv3)
Program for structural analysis using the Stiffness Matrix Method. It has its own graphical interface and full GUI. Now being translated to English. It is developed in Gambas3 basic only. The same author of GauchoCAD.

    .
Here a video about estru3D and virtual reality.

  • @bitacovir awesome! Just added to the wiki. Would love to hear @Jesusbill 's thoughts on it.

  • Should this be on this list? I don't understand enough about the file formats it uses: https://www.osgeo.org/projects/perfecttin/

  • There are more open source render engines for adding to the visualisation list:
    https://www.ogre3d.org/ MIT License
    https://www.panda3d.org/ BSD license

  • @duncan yes, I believe it should be in the list under the GIS category.

@bitacovir this presents an interesting question - Godot is not on the list currently. Do we include game engine tech? What about VR/AR tech, which is sort of related too? It's kind of an auxiliary discipline, though it is increasingly being used especially in marketing and client engagement. What do you guys reckon? If so, it probably needs its own category, like "Real time visualisation engines, VR, and AR".

  • Yes !!, dont disregard the guy in the office bringing new work! that guy is using
your BIM model (and in the very same software) he or she is setting camera views/camera paths,
to create clips, and probably later edited in IMOVIE or else to seek a new job....
The true is that this architectural endeavor doesnt stop there! if enough time AND MONEY the she/he
is taking your model to UE, TM or Lumion, etc for a killer presentation, ... we need the tools to sell first so we can have a project , IMHO

  • @Moult @rakela like with so many other things here it's a matter of effort and making a good structure. The wiki is there for anyone to work on.

    Hi to everyone,
I'm Riccardo from Italy and I use mainly open source for all my works.
I find myself in a lot of software that you have mentioned!

I'd like to share my experience with OpenProject. In my office we use the open source community edition ( GNU General Public License version 3 https://github.com/opf/openproject-ce ) in our server since 2017: I think it is a complete sofware for high-level project management, when you need to manage a large team and a great complexity. The latest versions are fixing some old issues.
I underline that, although it is not open source, they have started to create in paid versions a tight integration with the ifc format for the management of bim projects that could be very interesting for architecture and engineering studies: https://www.openproject.org/bim-project-management/
I am not aware of such integrated management systems.

    Happy new year!
    Riccardo

It looks nice, I would like to try it but I have problems installing the Gambas development environment needed.
The Direct Stiffness Method implemented is the basic "linear" method of structural analysis, which is fine for typical code-based verifications.

  • @Rickyx do you know why their BIM module is not open source? Is it because they are using Xeokit? If so, we should prioritise people testing and improving IFC.JS as well as BIMSurfer, so that people don't need to be locked into a proprietary environment.

  • I've set up the directories talk page so that if you don't want to add new software to the directory yourself, please add it at least to this page:
    https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title=Talk:AEC_Free_Software_directory

That's much less work for those of us who try to keep an eye on this thread and add things to the wiki.

  • @magicalcloud_75
thanks for sharing link to BricsCAD Shape ! I had to install the entire BricsCAD package to use Shape but very very nice ! thanks again... BricsCAD is not free tho! but not very expensive either.

  • @Moult yes, as I wrote, that part is not open source.
The overall project is open and you can install on your server except the bim part: it may be used for project management with or without the closed part.
BimSurfer and Ifc.js, if I understand correctly, are viewer / inspector. I would classify them in two different sections!
    Ciao,
    Riccardo
