BBIM - Excavation (Class and Quantity)

I have been using BBIM for some time now doing modeling and quantity take-off and I always wondered how the excavation volume of a foundation is handled in BIM or IFC 4 in general, I tried to find something on the web but it wasn't successful.

I noticed that 4x3 contemplates specific classes for earthmoving works, but how did designers manage (or still manage) excavation volumes in 2x3 and 4, especially in buildings for classification and quantity purposes?
