I always wanted my Modo back. I always had "toggle X-Ray" enabled and went to Shaded Mode to do get a reliable Selection. Selecting by "Face Center point" and made me nuts. I hope it can select also occluded Faces .....
EDIT : OK, not in Edit Mode. At least it works in Object Mode ....

I wasn't aware of Blenders Filter (Sub) Options in Outliner .....
So far I think choosing "Selected" does help to work with crowded Files
(If it does not negatively interfere elsewhere ... So far I all time moved cursor over Outliner and pressed NumComma to find my selected Object in Outliner)

actually, it does work in Edit mode, scroll down the T-panel and you'll see the Icon
Interesting, didn't know I have to/can activate it.
When activated, it works like a charm and I get colored Marquee fences - Great.
