  • Great share! Touched on many interesting points. The bits I found most interesting:

    • Always go back to the 4 freedoms. What are we? The Freedom to Design? The Freedom to Build? The Freedom to Operate. The Freedom to Rebuild?
    • BlenderLabs, super important to have the clever cookies in one room braining out the best way to keep 3D network connected (there's impressive demos with 3D collaboration with Omniverse that I keep on thinking about, and Blender needs to be part of it)
    • extensions.blender.org - not yet available, so will keep watching this space
    • Blender Apps, this would be a huge thing for the BlenderBIM Add-on!

A good man. With the things clear. He understand the right place of Blender in the world, as a tool for people, not for Hollywood (and that applies for projects like BlenderBIM).

    From your link

“As an architect, I want to send a client a project so that they can navigate around and experience it by themselves.” In this case, the app should be easy to run even if the client has never heard of Blender or 3D software before. You could prepare the scene, add basic navigation controls, and bundle the project .blend files together with Blender itself. The client would receive a .zip file with a single executable file inside (more on that in Distribution).

This is absolutely amazing, it means you could send someone a .zip file and a client would just open a portable bare Blender in which he can navigate ? How does that work? With containers or something?

Blender Apps seems to be a more catchy name for Blender Application Templates. This is not new, but is great. @chunchk has already started looking at one for BBIM https://github.com/chunchk/BlenderBIMApplicationTemplate
It would really make a huge difference if BBIM could be distributed as a customized Blender App.

  • A file association, so double clicking on an ifc file opens it in blenderbim, is an easy win. There is a working Linux config for this here, it just needs wiring into the blenderbim preferences: https://github.com/IfcOpenShell/IfcOpenShell/issues/2399

  • It's a bit more than an application template. Application templates can only go so far and can definitely not do what their demo showed. I used app templates to deploy a "simplified UI" for my coworkers, but it's pretty limited I'd say.

I guess the Application Templates part of this discussion should continue here: Blender: Application Templates. One of the strategic topics of Blender for 2022
