  • While today native Ifc file editing may be a big selling point, the following comment by Moult convinced me a non tech name is better long term choice: "I have noticed time and time again that as we grow, we outgrow existing solutions and slowly swap out with our own tailored tech." For the final vote, I'd like to shift my vote from Coral to Bonsai. Maybe with a punchline, like Bonsai; the native IFC editor.

  • Reading all the last comments. I am agree not having Ifc, Bim, Open... in the name it's better for many reasons. In my personal opinion I thing it would be great to atract as many people as possible and not just the more technical ones. It is important to be ambitious with this rebranding.
I change my vote from IfcLab to Bonsai.
I also vote for Nativa. It sounds great to me.

  • I’ll add a vote for Bunny and Bonsai

  • I understand the beauty of intricacy in bonsai, but I can’t avoid looking at another aspect of bonsai.

A tree by nature tries to grow larger, but in bonsai it is forced to stay in a tiny vessel. As a result, the tree cannot spread its root enough under the ground, so it gets short and stocky. In addition, it gets wires around its trunk and branches to change its form in the way spectators are delighted.

I personally do not feel that this aspect correctly reflects the core value of this software: free, open-sourced, and community-based.I understand the beauty of intricacy in bonsai, but i can’t avoid looking at another aspect of bonsai.

This is just my personal feeling, I would like to hear how you guys think about this.

  • i could spend hours writing this up, but the robots know best. ;)...

The word "Bonsai" could relate to IfcOpenShell, BlenderBIM, and OSArch in the following ways:

    1. IfcOpenShell:

      • Precision and Detail: Just as bonsai trees are meticulously cultivated with precision, IfcOpenShell is a tool that allows for precise manipulation and analysis of IFC data. The care and attention required for bonsai cultivation can be metaphorically linked to the precision required in managing and manipulating BIM data.
      • Growth and Structure: Bonsai trees are cultivated in a controlled manner, much like how IfcOpenShell helps structure and manage building data in a controlled and organized fashion.
    2. BlenderBIM:

      • Customization and Craft: In bonsai, every branch and leaf is carefully crafted, which parallels BlenderBIM’s customization capabilities, allowing users to shape and mold their BIM data and models according to specific project needs.
      • Artistry in Modeling: Just as bonsai is both an art and a science, BlenderBIM integrates the artistic aspects of 3D modeling with the scientific precision required for BIM.
    3. OSArch:

      • Sustainability and Minimalism: Bonsai trees represent sustainability, minimalism, and thoughtful design, values that are central to the OSArch community, which advocates for sustainable and open-source architecture.
      • Community and Cultivation: Just as bonsai requires a community of practitioners who share knowledge and techniques, OSArch thrives on the shared contributions and collaborative efforts of its community members to grow the open-source ecosystem.

The word "Bonsai" in this context could symbolize a philosophy of careful, thoughtful development and growth, both in terms of software tools and the broader goals of the open-source architecture community.

Here are some additional parallels between "Bonsai" and the values or characteristics of IfcOpenShell, BlenderBIM, and OSArch:

    1. IfcOpenShell:

    • Pruning for Optimization: Just as bonsai trees are pruned to remove unnecessary branches and encourage healthy growth, IfcOpenShell allows for the filtering and refining of IFC data. This optimization ensures that only the most relevant information is used, which is key in managing complex building models.
    • Longevity and Preservation: Bonsai trees are known for their longevity and the care taken to preserve them over time. Similarly, IfcOpenShell supports long-term preservation of building information, adhering to open standards that ensure data remains accessible and usable for future generations.

    2. BlenderBIM:

    • Adaptive Growth: Bonsai trees are trained to grow in specific shapes, adapting to the constraints imposed by their environment. BlenderBIM enables adaptive design, allowing users to customize workflows, interfaces, and models to fit unique project requirements, much like shaping a bonsai to fit a particular aesthetic.
    • Scale and Proportion: Bonsai emphasizes the importance of scale and proportion, even in miniature form. BlenderBIM provides tools for precise scaling and proportioning of architectural models, ensuring that every detail, regardless of size, is accurately represented.

    3. OSArch:

    • Harmony with Nature: Bonsai represents harmony with nature, a value that resonates with OSArch’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious design practices. The OSArch community advocates for building practices that are in harmony with the environment, much like the careful cultivation of a bonsai.
    • Open Sharing and Knowledge Transfer: The art of bonsai is passed down through generations, with knowledge shared openly among enthusiasts. OSArch embodies this spirit of open sharing, where tools, techniques, and knowledge are freely exchanged within the community to advance the practice of open-source architecture.

    4. General Parallels:

    • Patience and Mastery: Cultivating a bonsai tree requires patience and mastery, often taking years to achieve the desired form. Similarly, mastering tools like IfcOpenShell, BlenderBIM, and contributing to OSArch requires dedication, practice, and a long-term commitment to learning and improving.
    • Balance and Aesthetics: Bonsai is about achieving a balance between nature and art, creating a visually pleasing form. In the context of these tools, this balance can be seen in the way they strive to balance functionality with user-friendly design, creating tools that are both powerful and aesthetically pleasing to use.

The concept of "Bonsai" can thus be a rich metaphor for the meticulous care, dedication, and thoughtfulness required in both software development and the practice of architecture, particularly within the open-source community.

  • I'll throw in for Bonsai, as well. Well done @Massimo and @JanF

  • if we're not going to have another round at this, I would like to vote also for Bonsai.

  • There's quite a bit of time pressure, so I'd like to get the name finalised by today. This would mean that we are able to resubmit to the Blender extensions website by tomorrow or the day after, which gives us 2.5 weeks for both testing and to sit in the moderation queue. Ideally it is approved at least a week prior to the next release date.

Unfortunately this dictatorial final selection will mean that we don't get another round of voting (it seems it takes a good week to collect enough feedback). However despite that I'm still super thrilled and I think we discussed a huge number of options over the past week and lots of good ideas came about.

  • I'd vote for "BonsaiBIM" and not "Bonsai" as it might be tricky to search.

  • I vote for BonsaiBIM too we can always shorten it to Bonsai

  • There once was a very nice Addin for a proprietary BIM application called CoralBrush which is what I first thought of when reading the new name proposal. I also find the similarity to CorelDraw dissuasive. Writing this up, you might come up with a western film connotation. Other than that, I like the name.

  • I vote for BonsaiBIM

I see the name as something that can have a huge impact in attracting or repulsing users.
Coming from marketing to architecture, I can't really see anything IFC labeled catching with general public like blender did. This may have the opposite effect driven them away and scared with the bridge their minds are going to connect with this technical shenanigans designers and architects don't want to be bothered about. The "libre" stuff is now connected to a perception of poor quality office versions ( I dont agree with the perception just acknowledge it), also the libre/free projects tends to get stagnated, and Coral may be mistaken with Corel. Lol.
    I do like:
Bonsai - is indeed a very marketable name.
    Nativa - sound very fancy.
AECStudio - is something we all can relate to (simple and direct). Also it seems really proper to attract and centralizing all future AeC efforts into it's umbrella.

    Very insightful comment!

Most of us are AEC professionals, maybe someone with a programming background, or a certain combination of both, and that makes us good for doing our jobs, of course, but not necessarily so good to nail a rebranding strategy. This is the first comment I see from someone coming from marketing. I believe we should listen to scarce quality feedback in the marketing domain like this!

  • The comment from @theoryshaw tells me the other aspects that I didn't notice. I now understand there are a lot of relationships between this software and bonsai.

I didn't mean to disgrace the name bonsai. I support the name picked by this community.

(In fact, I used to cultivate a small bonsai tree. I really loved it, but I couldn't keep the tree alive. I needed more care... The name of the tree is "木瓜" in Japanese or "Boke" in alphabet. It also starts with "B" :) Coincidence!)

  • I agree with Bonsai BIM 🌳

  • I vote for BonsaiBIM

  • I like a name that is related to what the software does:

    • BIM4B (you know, B as in Blender)
    • BIMforB

  • I vote for Bonsai

    • My vote is towards IFCOpenSuite, BIM, BBIM.
    • Maybe IfcOpenApp or BIMOpenShell.

    • How about Bimble. It's a noun/verb so isn't copyrightable, contains bim, have a hint of Blender but doesn't contain it.

    • We can go cheeky and just remove "l" so it becomes BenderBIM. Not sure if Blender will allow it. But it kinda makes sense, as Blend is related to graphics while Bend is related to architecture.

  • A huge thanks to everybody for the incredible brainstorm.

    Say hello to Bonsai :)

  • I know it's a lot of work to rebrand, but you are doing a great job. It's a minor detail, but BonsaiBIM is better than Bonsai, because Bonsai is a plant thing. The community is fine with Bonsai, but I think GitHub and X should be BonsaiBIM.

  • Should the workspace be called BIM or Bonsai?

  • edited August 2024

May be too late but i like IfcLab, IfcStudio or IfcOpenStudio, IfcDesign or IfcOpenDesign
    Cheers

  • I liked that you used BonsaiBim. It, indeed, makes it easier to general public google/looking for it as pointed out.

  • I also agree with Bonsai

  • And now the logo o(>.<)o

Old logo does fit in nicely. But since you guys are all for the subliminal meaning her goes nothing: you could try the bonsai tree like this
But rotate the original BlenderBim B logo

    90 degrees
making it the house behind the bonsai. And while we are at it, we might wanna make the branchs like a bunny or a computer mouse while keeping this cloud(ish) style.

  • BBIM
Maybe late to the table, why not simply BBIM , has links to previous abbreviation of blenderbim, could also be short for BunnyBim or BuildingBim

Haven`t dealt with the colors yet. Just applied some pastel to it cause the bonsai thing brought me the origame paper feeling. Lol. IT is terrible on those colors, but maybe someone could pickup from here.
Would also sugest a different color, but I have a lot on my hands this week.

  • May want to be prepared to change the name again...
