Just a thank you ....

Turns out that BlenderBIM is my most trustful and reliable BIM Viewer.
(Not even tried to play with creation of BIM Files directly in Blender,
together with some of these Architecture AddOns so far)

Usually I use OpenIFCViewer from ODA to check or quick look at IFC files,
as it is free, fast and simple. I did not have good experiences with free
versions of proprietary BIM management/viewers in the past for several reasons,
although they sometimes offer somenice exchnge/integration in my CAD Aps.
OpenIFCViewer even finally got Apple ARM and Metal Support.
And I expected it to be reliable, as being the source of IFC Support for many
proprietary CAD/BIM Apps.
But it turned out that I more and more miss some IFC 4 tagged elements in
OpenIFCViewer. Mostly Roof objects from Vectorworks exports.

But when I try to check and open such an IFC in Blender/BIM,
every object is magically there and visible as it should be ...

I would have expected the open source project lagging behind instead.
I only had an single IFC issue in BlenderBIM once, that I mentioned as a
side note on the forum. And it was cared about, recognized as an issue
within BIM specification and therefore fixed just 2 days later.

When I upgrade BlenderBIM from time to time I usually just grabt for the
daily builds, although some tutorial videos warned but it was always a
smooth experience.

So again a big thank you for the great experience !!!

  • @zoomer the man you should thank is @aothms ! He has worked tirelessly since 2011 and is showing no signs of stopping.

  • The men and women you should thank are the people behind OpenCascade, working tirelessly since the 80s etc. you get the idea. That is the wonderful thing about open source though. Building upon each others work in close collaboration with the community :)

To be honest we do lag behind in some aspects. IFC4.3 and IFC4.4 geometry definitions to name a few.

  • OK, thanks to the whole community of course :)

    Ah, OK,
I did not notice any problems with my IFC 4.3 exports coming in via BlenderBIM so far.
I recently asked if I should always use the latest IFC versions.
Maybe not the most latest version ....

Oh, I have to apologize for bashing ODAs OpenIFCViewer.
It only happens when I activate its Solid Importer Option. Works fine with default Mesh Importer.
And just with that (or other special) Files (?) And it opens other IFC 4 Exports fine.
So they do not have forgotten how IFC works ....

Looks like I exploded one multiply Wall with Doors and Windows.
That seemed to export from Vectorworks a bit crappy in that case.

But still great that BlenderBIM always eats such files without issues.

  • I am really impressed how stable the BlenderBIM add-on now is.
I've used different profiles, IFC array, IFC assemblies and IFC openings on this wall, made several changes in the profile, material, opening. etc. Everytime the IFC just saved perfectly, no strange behaviour so far:
The opening has cut with ease through the cladding geometry which is created by an array
