The steering committee is one year old! Come and join us.

edited February 2023 in General

Back in March we finally made solid moves to create a steering committee (SC)

The people who stepped up for the SC were Ioannis Christovasilis @Jesusbill (Ioannis), Peter Sande @CadGiru, Bruno Postle @brunopostle, Ryan Schultz @theoryshaw, Dion Moult @Moult and Duncan Lithgow @duncan (me).

So far we've held a meeting every month with public minutes for most of them (and some other files) on our gitlab. Sometimes we just chatted with less structure so there are no minutes.

So now it's been a year and it could be good with some new blood. Maybe you don't like the idea of being on a committee? But really, if you get value from OSArch maybe it's time to give something back - all we're asking for is your thoughts and ideas. No-one has to work on any project they don't want to or don't have time to. There are all sorts of things to discuss, ideas to throw around, priorities to select and just general chat about what this OSArch project of ours is all about.

Maybe you even have an opinion about some of the topics we've discussed?

Some topics from previous meetings are:

  • February minutes: How can we become a legal organisation. We are now a US 501(c)(6) allowing tax exempt donations in some circumstances. But what about the rest of the world? See https://opencollective.com/osarch
  • May minutes: Still discussing funding models, now also brainstormning on the types of projects that could be relevant. Also thinking about whether OSArch could have a commercial offering of some sort, maybe courses & certifications?
  • June minutes: we talked about possible improvements to the look of the wiki and the structure of the software directory. We chose a new banner/ background and switched our identity from "Open Source in Architecture" to "OSArch - Open Source in AEC". Our OSArch Open Collective was approved and we talked about donation tiers and how the whole things works. We chatted some more about good types of projects to support. We were also running a forum thread on brainstorming project ideas.
  • June minutes: We talked more about how to set up and use our new funding platform. Also about how to bring the community into selecting projects we should feature on the OSArch Collective.
  • September minutes: how do we select the most important projects to receive funding? how do we involve larger funding?
  • October minutes changed the supporter tiers on the OSArch Collective, working on how to make project proposals specific and measurable. Discussed starting a paid course ( @SigmaDimensions )
  • November minutes more chatting about a paid python course, started a voting thread for project proposals. Would be great to restart the monthly presentations - but not the time & energy involved. Maybe needs a different format?
  • December mintes we have a chosen project for the OSArch collective. Agreed to some fund matching from the general pool. Creating an OSArch gitea instance. We'd like to help with start funding @SigmaDimensions courses but money is scarce. Talked about clarifying the SCs decision making process.

Do you have an opinion on any of those topics? I bet you do! If you're at the meetings (at least some of them) you can tell us what you think!

So, who'd like to get involved? Ask us about what we do and tell us what you think is important. We almost never ask for your donations & support - but we're doing it now.
