    Hello,

I am civil and software engineer from Colombia and a strong believer of community-driven initiatives like this one. I stumbled upon OSArch while looking for open source tools alternatives to AutoCAD and Revit, which I have not used for several years. I am more than happy to have found out initiatives like BonsaiBIM and IfcOpenShell in general.

My aim is to delve into these tools and, in the medium to long-term, eventually contribute with code.

  • Hello everyone!
My name is Cleber and I'm an electrical engineer from Brazil. I started my career in the data and digital commerce industry where I became digital commerce specialist in VTEX leveraging skills in positions such as data analytics, field software engineering and partner field software engineering for Brazil and global. More recently in 2025 I've created my own company focused on bringing technology to my states countryside region. It has been a quite challenging but amazing experience. As of now in regards to AEC I've engaged on getting to know the Open Company Engine community, phenomenal work about bringing huge IFC viewer and editor to the browser insane fast; and took my time to prepare classes on electrical best practices in building systems in my YouTube page (here), and I'm developing a low fee FreeCAD course meant to welcome people interested in 3D modeling in this world (Portuguese only for now). Also just started learning Blender and it seems really hard to find material online about bonsai applied to electrical engineering, so I hope to add something ment to address this gap in the future. I'll leave here my website and LindkeIn Profile if anyone would like to connect and chat. I loved to find this community and I'm really excited about the open and collaborative future of BIM.

  • Hello All,
May I ask for some guidance and support?
I just realized I have been a member for two years and I really do not even know where to get started with the forum.
I am planning to actively dive into Blender and see how it will work out to model buildings, and more importantly generate construction documents from it. Is BlenderBim still a thing? Or has it been replaced by Bonsai? Or perhaps you can use both depending on needs?
from everything I have seen so far (which admittedly is not a lot) it seems like the "documentation" side-of-things might still be at a pretty rudimentary stage. Is that just a mis-guided assumption/observation?
Could anyone point me towards the most complete resource for getting started with that? I would love to connect with someone that might be willing to offer a tour of the system and basic documentation starting point.
Thank you in advance for any information and guidance you might be willing to share with me.

  • @Daroja hi :-) first things first, Blenderbim has changed the name to Bonsai..so if you find Blenderbim it means that it is old.
So, talking about Bonsai, unfortunately there is no so much documentation about it because it is under heavy development and the documentation becomes old soon..but, on the other hand, there is so much stuff here and there, but you have to search for it :-)
I suggest you to start with IfcArchitect youtube channel that has a lot of free videos useful for your purpose.
The most complete tutorial i think is this one
    https://opencollective.com/openingdesign/projects/blender_bonsai_tutorials_od?slug=blender_bonsai_tutorials_od
You have to invest a bit on it but it is totally worth it.
Anyway, the most important thing i think it's this forum where you can find a lot of stuff and ask for help; also the chat is very useful.
Cheers and have a good journey! :-)

  • @Massimo, Thank you so much!
I really appreciate the info. Yes, I will need to dive into it and will be back with questions and challenges, I am sure.
    Cheers!

  • Welcome @Daroja. Good to see another architect from the states. :)
To get a sense of what of the type of documentation Bonsai can produce, see the following thread.

  • Thank you for these examples @theoryshaw, that is exactly what I am looking for.
Will need to carve out time so I can effectively make a switch, and it looks like it might take a little time to complete it.
    Looking forward to getting there.
Any insight on units and where to find guidance for switching them to imperial? Will start the tutorials and might be there.
    Thank you again

  • edited December 2025

You're welcome. These tutorials are in imperial.
IMHO, however, in learning Bonsai, units don't really matter.

  • Hi All,
I am based in Germany and just started to be an architect, not employed by architects. I decided it would be good to go new ways in terms of production. I have some blender experience and started learning bonsai.
I found fascinating what the OSArch community has already created and want to contribute.
    Cheers.

  • He All,
3d designer and architectural problem solver for nearly 25 years. Based in Germany and embracer of open source where possible. Long devoted to Blender and Freecad but newly attempting Bonsai. Suffering much blood loss in the process.... but improving. The software shows great promise and, no doubt, much of my suffering has been endured by most of you. Looking forward to tidying up my workflow and being a part of this community. Best wishes,

  • @finn i love the online calculator project

    Finn
  • @Nigel I love this online calculator project as well. I’ve personally used https://ti84calculatonline.com/
and found it really smooth and accurate, especially for graphing and equation solving. It works fast directly in the browser and feels very close to a real TI-84 experience. Definitely useful for students and anyone working with math.

  • Hi folks ,
I am Abdoulaye (call me Abdou), a BIM/GIS enthusiast with a computer science background and based in Australia (mostly... I tend to wander). I work a lot with IFC, 3D geometry, and BIM<->GIS integration workflows. I run a small company and do consulting for living, but I really enjoy is building small tools and plugins to automate the boring stuff. Some of them are listed on my website (CityGeometrix). I also share some related content on my LinkedIn every now and then.
I’ve been a regular visitor here for a while and just realized I wasn’t even registered when I tried to jump into a conversation. Now I'm in :-)
    Cheers

  • Hey everyone, I'm Julian, currently doing my masters degree in architecture in Aachen, Germany. I'm also working part-time in in a small architecture firm and at the university helping teach first year students.
I'm a long time Blender user and recently got introduced to Bonsai and started working on my own extension this past term. I learned about OSArch through the chair of design computation and I'm curious to see what this community is up to. It was also suggested that I post something about my project here, which I plan to follow through on!
I tried to start a discussion, but I think it needs to be approved still? Not sure what the customs are here, sorry :|
Anyways I'm glad to be here o/

  • Hi, my name is Dustin and I suspect I may be a bit of an outlier in the OSArch community. My background is in set design for the theatre, and more recently in film and television as well. Of course, as set designers we adopt many tools of the architect and while I am not a programmer I have been a long time enthusiast and user of FOSS wherever possible. My CAD package having always been the lone exception. I am joining this forum as a new Bonsai user.

I've dabbled with FreeCAD a bit over the years and managed to use it for some small drafting packets on a couple of theatre productions way back on v0.19! I know FreeCAD has made a lot of exciting progress since then (hello v1.0) but I still just am not practiced enough with it to replace the proprietary ACAD clone in my kit. I have been learning Bonsai over the last week or so and I am very excited for its potential as the missing link in my workflow. For building scenery I am obviously less concerned with all of the data and features available to a strict IFC compliant model, but I am very interested in the prospect of modeling a set with the speed and flexibility of Blender and finally having a tool to easily extract section cuts and to-scale drafting plates that a construction team can build from.

I hope I am able to offer a unique perspective to any FreeCAD and Bonsai developers in the forum as to how these tools may be used in the entertainment industry!

  • Hi folks, time to (re)introduce myself here. I'm Nathaniel Edmunds — currently based in Tokyo — originally found this network in grad school some time ago and, while I remain a Blender user and FOSS fan, I work at least as much in Houdini and Unreal these days, Rhino as well but mostly for Grasshopper. I've recently started a department in my company called Human Ecology Systems, where I'm doing developing products and services for sustainability in AEC. I have a fairly non-specialized background, I would say, and have been in a lot of different roles — ten years in teaching (high school art&design in alt.ed/PBL/STEM spaces primarily) and design/build being probably the most primary and relevant here. Looking forward to reconnecting more with you all as I endeavor to make some relevant contributions over the next few years.

  • Hi everyone, I'm Luca Civil Engineer from Italy, some of you already know me :)
I work on major infrastructure projects in Italy and abroad, and I’m trying to promote Bonsai and OpenBIM through an Italian-language publication on Substack: https://lucaflorio.substack.com/
I also published a plugin that integrates the IfcOpenShell library directly into Rhino and Grasshopper, enabling users to work with Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) files within their parametric design workflows. The plugin provides a comprehensive toolkit for importing, inspecting, editing, and exporting BIM data using the open IFC standard. It's called IfcHopperShell: https://www.food4rhino.com/en/app/ifchoppershell

  • Hi everyone, I'm Shabir Ahmad ,Civil Engineering graduate from Pakistan, admitted to Bauhaus University Weimar this year.
I've been working on IFC based automation using IfcOpenShell and Python. My current project is StructBOQ, a quantity takeoff and cost estimation engine that processes IFC2x3/4/4x3 files from Revit, ArchiCAD, and Tekla exports, with Excel/PDF output and full Pset audit trail.
Looking to contribute to open BIM workflows and learn from people doing real IFC work. Happy to share code and get feedback.

  • Hi All!

My name is Bowen Call, I run a BIM consulting company called UtahBIM. I love automating our processes and have been a big fan of Speckle for close to five years now. I grew up with a dad that would take old windows computers and install Linux on them. He would show me how communities would come together and put software together for free in order to help make a difference in the world.

I’m excited to help make a contribution to the OSArch community. I’m particularly interested in helping create a modeling authoring software that is open-source. I watched Corridor Crew on YouTube open-source their CorridorKey to revolutionize green screen effects and that inspired me to do what I can to help push web-based, open-source, AEC modeling and drafting a reality.
