  • @Tobal welcome! As always, feel free to ask for help and we'll all learn together!

@hsong welcome! I actually did quite a body of work with utility poles and 5G antenna, and that work actually helped build a lot of the original drawing generation features in the BlenderBIM Add-on. We used IFC classes for the poles and had a library of 3D plumes as IfcBuildingElementProxy (though we should've probably used IfcAnnotation).

I think this is a perfect usecase for IFC stored in some form of database (have you seen the thread about using IFC with SQL?) as it has lots of small objects spread around geographically and often you want to just query one or two zones, or bulk process.

Thanks @Moult , it is good to hear you touch the wireless as well :). I am aware of some specific IFC classes to handle the communication network (e.g. IfcCommunicationsAppliance and IfcCommunicationsAppliance /ANTENNA), but currently are far from describe the network comprehensively. Will see how we can combine the IFC and possibly link with some external data sets.

I think this is a perfect usecase for IFC stored in some form of database (have you seen the thread about using IFC with SQL?) as it has lots of small objects spread around geographically and often you want to just query one or two zones, or bulk process.

Exactly. I have read through your thread, and some other early works for others (but no hands on the code yet). In our case, often there are more than one building evolved (e.g. campus, CBD etc.). Also currently the tricky part is to handle both indoor and outdoor in the same project. For outdoor, besides traditional 2D/2.5D GIS format (e.g. shp, tiff etc.), we also have CityGML/CityJSON for 3D modelling, I see there is possibility to extend IFC to cover both indoor and outdoor modelling (which can ease the work on both sides). Some interesting work to convert citygml/cityjson to IFC are quite promising though in a very early stage.

Sorry to talk too much in an introductory thread. Will open dedicated thread topics in case I have anything to share or ask.

  • Hi everyone,
I'm Simone, I work as a civil engineer and I collaborate in the design of structural projects and thermal calculations.
I'm impressed by BlenderBim because, as opensource software, I think it could represent the future standard of construction software.
Thank you for creating this great community

  • Hello,
Glad to be part of this community! I am Chamindu, an architect, currently pursuing a BIM master's and found BlenderBIM in one of my first semester assignments. So my thesis work has brought me here because I am trying a specific workflow (more details to come...) with Blender and BlenderBIM and but I have limited knowledge of those including Python, and ifcopenshell (but gladly I am keen to learn :) ). So far, the YT channels and discussions here have helped me tremendously. Thank you all for the great content and contributions.
And I hope I can contribute to this very promising initiative towards openBIM also.

  • Hi everyone,
really happy to be part of the community!
My name is Giorgio and I'm a computational structural engineer at Buro Happold in London.
I've attended the Zigurat Post-Graduate Course in Parametric Modelling 2 years ago and I had the chance to be wonderfully introduced to ifcopenshell and BlenderBIM by Dion Moult!
At the moment I'm working on new building projects in the Middle East and I'd like to use ifcopenshell to create builderswork openings through rc walls starting from the .ifc files of Structural and MEP disciplines!
Is there anyone who could help me with this and/or has already done it?

  • Welcome @SimoneC @Chamma @ING_MIGUELYEPEZ @GCR87 !

@GCR87 I believe @fbpyr has done similar things where either he generated or checked opening penetrations based on the objects that go through them. It's probably best to start a new thread with your ideas and what you've tried / what you're trying to achieve. However it sounds like a geometric exercise and in that case you'll find these three articles useful:

  • Greetings!
Very pleased to be among so many passionate, experienced people. I'm grateful for all the inspiring people here.
I have a small-time home renovations and hard landscaping business. I studied design and Interior Architecture at university. I like computers.
It really bothers me how much the big companies charge for software, and how they license it.
Everyone deserves quality alternatives so they can design and build the world around them!

I think it's a great idea to integrate a 360 photo into a CAD environment. In addition, it is not a fixed photo, but a temporary evolution. Looks like that is a more agile solution than a lidar scanner or photogrammetry. Brilliant.
I've been following news about blender bim for a long time and I think it's starting to be a real alternative. Thanks for sharing!

  • Hello everyone!

I am very happy to find so many people involved with open-source software for AEC! I have learned a lot by following the discussions here from afar for some time now, and every time I come back, I discover new and very interesting and inspiring content.

I'm from Brazil, child of architects from the older generation before the computer era, who used to do everything by hand with their drawing instruments before any CAD tools existed. As a teenager, I took an Autocad course and started working with them, digitizing what they did on paper. I learned to create 3D virtual models first in Autocad, then in 3DSMax, and I continued working with them, handling architectural visualization even while studying chemistry for 10 years.

After that, I realized that despite enjoying the world of molecules and atoms, I was more engaged with ideas of projects and constructions. So, I decided to study architecture and urban planning in college. It was then that I discovered Blender 2.76, and since then, I've been dreaming of a 100% open-source workflow, without needing to boot into Windows to work with its proprietary black-box formats.

I gradually got involved in translating the Blender manual to PT-BR, and this year I made my first code contribution to the Sunposition add-on :). Last year, I defended my thesis at college, which was entirely done with open-source software. It was a project for a park along the heavily polluted Tietê River in São Paulo, made with Blender, QGIS, Inkscape, Scribus, and Gimp, all on a Linux environment, of course!

At the office, a small studio where we work on residential and commercial projects, our workflow involves digitizing paper-based designs/concepts into 2D CAD, exporting to DXF for Blender, creating 3D models, and finalizing the concept with solar analysis tools in 3D. Then, return to CAD to create all 2D documentation, including plumbing and electrical installation plans.

Once I finish college, my main goal is to break free from the DWG format for storing project information. The dream is to save all 2D information in SVG (with the possibility to export to DXF) and delve deeper into the world of IFC, which is not yet a part of my work. I've found people here working in this direction, and I plan to dive into coding soon. The idea is to develop/get involved in something that already exists, enabling the creation of technical drawings/notations in 2D through a command-line interface. I've seen discussions related to this in connection with BlenderBIM. I've also just discovered Excalidraw and tldraw (both web apps) through the Wiki. One of the many questions is whether it would be better for this 2D editing to happen within Blender itself or in a separate application, possibly online. Anyway, this conversation could go on; I would love to hear your thoughts on these matters. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Big hug!

Hey. I'm an academic in Scotland. I've actually been using BlenderBIM for a while, but only very occasionally until now. Recently, I've however been using it a lot more in the context of Digital Twinning construction projects (the construction phase). For this, I have been exploring and using things such as (all still ongoing):

    • Property editing using the Spreadsheet Editor
    • Information requirements checking using the IDS Checker
    • (Semi-)Automated 4D modelling
Most of this is mainly focused on research. But, I'm also thinking of introducing BlenderBIM in a course I deliver to Civil & Structural Engineers.

  • Gday OSArchers, very new to the group and very new User behind the wheel. Still trying to stay in my lane and not crash into others. Forgive my Rookie questions, but I will attempt to search previous forum posts before raising my hand for help.
My focus will be on the Structural discpline and in particular a workflow for detailed Construction Documentation. I have in recent time built 2d drawing automation system on proprietary software so keen to explore a newer more modern approach to share the flow of detailed construction information. I feel the OS environment will offer that opportunity by the removal limitations traditional software creates.

I plan to use BB as model conditioning tool whilst I expand my knowledge to navigate the new platform. This includes building better IFC export tools to get my old projects and current projects out of traditional platforms into clean air.

After watching as much tutorial content as I could to get started, it has been apparent from the outset that there are some super innovative minds working on clever projects. I hope to be able to contribute to the ongoing growth and success of Blender, BlenderBIM, IFCOpenShell, OSArch.

I would like to thank all the early adopters and those which have contributed to the development of the community thus far.

  • Hi Everyone!

I am Gergely Kis, Co-Founder and CTO of Migeran (https://migeran.com), our software development and consulting company. We are Godot Engine and Robotics experts, with 6 years of experience in complex AR / VR projects. We are also Godot Engine contributors, e.g. we implemented the Meta Quest 2 support for Godot 4.
I have been following the OSArch developments for a few years now, both on the FreeCAD and on the BlenderBIM side. We even created a few Architecture-specific prototypes for Godot: a VR viewer with Godot for SweetHome3D plans and an IFC viewer based on IFC++.
I am personally interested in further developing the OpenBIM ecosystem, FreeCAD and BlenderBIM in particular, and providing additional tools based on the Godot Engine.
    Kind regards,
    Gergely

PS: Our company is also available for hire for new software development projects, including 2D & 3D graphics, CAD, robotics, mobile & web apps.

  • Hi everyone,
my name is André. At this time, I am working for a lead appointed party, which specialised in building construction like hospitals. I am responsible for the BIM-Coordination. Besides that, I have worked as a structural engineer and modeller for a wood construction company. With the time I realised the potential, that open BIM processes has, and I am happy to get deeper into this topic.
Thank you so much to the people that created this community, I am happy to be part of it.

  • G'day osarchers ;)
i'm pierre and i'd like to thank you first. Yes, big up to the people who made this possible and let me landing here: blenderbim aussie guy, ifc-architect, theoryshaw (show?), myoualid, and people where posts are of help
uninterestingly, i was an academic, switched into kinda farmer, and I would like to build things now, an eternal noob still with OS blood ;)
    now the things:
meshes from 3D laser scans, lidar and drone views photogrammetry meshes of a whole ROI, I need to draw plans (cabins, home..), and finally integrate the stuff within a scene. When the time comes to build, how many logs, lights, km of cables... do I need, of which type, so lot of questions I know now the BIM thing is meant to answer.
I can (try to) give a hand on linux-related questions, more familiar with this kind of 'architecture' ;)
In short, I'm really happy to be here

  • Hi Everyone
Big thank you for making and keeping this open source.
My name is Roel Defloo, I am a construction project manager by profession based in Tzaneen, South Africa. I am passionate about BIM (5D and full life cycle costing) since 2013 lost some of the passion between 2015 and 2021 as it was a costly and the cost/benefit ratio was very low. In 2023 realised that IFC files have finally gained popularity and better adoption by the industry.
I am looking forward to learning more about managing the “data”/properties side of the model with the hope to be able to contribute to the group in the future.

  • Hi community! :)
My name is Enrique, and I am a Spanish architect currently based in The Netherlands. Like many other architects, I was exposed to programming for the first time when I started creating my own scripts for Dynamo/Grasshopper in Revit/Rhino to automate my daily tasks. The vast world that opened up in front of me introduced me to Python, and since then, I have been honing my coding skills. Currently, I am learning C# to create my own add-ins and applications, but my aim is to continue following my roadmap to learn other languages like JavaScript. This is my first contact with the Open Source community, and my aspiration is to move forward on my knowledge journey while contributing to the OS community. I am looking forward to hearing about potential projects I can contribute to. Thanks for the fantastic job you all do!

  • Hi Everyone!
First than all, I'll like to thank all the developers working in tools that look to offer open source alternatives for a more inclusive AEC industry. Really thank you. My name is Diego Alvarez and I am from Colombia. Currently I am studying in Japan as a MEXT Scholar. The research Lab I am currently associated with is researching in passive design and energy efficiency of residential buildings in the hot-humid weather of South-East Asia (Specifically Indonesia) and India. Within my Lab I am currently researching in the saved environmental impacts (mainly CO2 emissions and Embodied Energy) derived from the use of structural engineered wooden materials as an alternative to "conventional" Reinforced Concrete and Steel structural systems. Previously I had experience back in my country as part of the team leading the BIM strategy of a Swedish-Finnish building material company for the Colombian market and also worked in different projects involving BIM both as a modeler and later as part of coordination teams.
I look very much forward to learn more of these tools and including them in my current workflow (hopefully some of this to be published on a peer review journal). Thank you again and keep up the good work :)
