Hello everyone!
My name is Ziad, a fourth-year CS student, and I'm very excited to join this community as a GSoC'24 participant for this summer!
I'll be working on this project for BlenderBim, which is about a web-based UI running alongside Blender for spreadsheets and other functionalities.
I'm looking forward to learning from everyone and contributing to this community. If you have any advice for a new GSoC newcomer I'd love to hear it!
Hello everyone!
I'm an Architectural engineering graduate and a self-taught software developer. Happy to be part of this community and looking forward to meeting you all here and on linkedin!
Hi Folks,
currently i'm working as BIM manager for the developer.
10+ years in the AEC industry as the architect, project manager and the site architectural supervisor.
Sometimes I still work as design architect, coordinating technical specification writing, engineering solutions and architectural ideas.
I speak PHP, Python and C, can understand JavaScript, HTML, C++ , C#, Ruby and Perl.
Revit as the main modelling tool, Archicad as the need.
Hi folks,
my name is Smiljan and I am an experienced Civil Engineer with a proven track record in the AEC and computer software industry for the last 10 years. My skills include agile software development, Finite Element Modeling (FEM), and various aspects of Civil Engineering.
Dion's LinkedIn post about Blender and OpenBIM blew me away. I first encountered Blender while learning Unity in my spare time, and it never occurred to me that it could be such a powerful, free tool for BIM and the AEC industry. 🤩
🔥 Presently, my primary focus lies on Open BIM, a process aimed at enhancing collaboration among project stakeholders to achieve heightened transparency and longevity of data throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. Open BIM stands as the preferred path to circumvent the monopolization of the construction industry by a few software companies, ensuring greater accessibility, interoperability, and a level playing field for all stakeholders. Without the adoption of open BIM standards, the peril of becoming beholden to a single software vendor grows, including the risk of vendor lock-in.
💻 I’m familiar with programming languages like Python, C/C++, Dart, and C#, and I’ve also worked with VBA to create macros. Additionally, I utilize batch programming and PowerShell to automate processes. Besides that, I have experience in web development, both frontend and backend (e.g. Django Framework), database relations, and cloud computing, which gives me a broad range of skills in software development. While I may not consider myself a top-level programming expert, my programming knowledge is sufficient for my needs and allows me to accomplish my objectives effectively.
📷 I love graphic design, and it significantly enhances my UX and UI design skills. It helps me create attractive and user-friendly interfaces by combining creativity and aesthetics effectively.
⚡ As an engineer, I try to support different open source projects out there. Open source is a philosophy and a movement, and what makes open source thrive is the community around it. I get to meet great people that way!!!
🌱 In my free time, I love to walk and enjoy nature. Being in nature gives me new energy!
I think that connecting is a great way of seeing other people's work and get inspired.
Welcome everybody! @NickNunes what type of engineer are you?
@ejs and @smiljan_tukic it sounds like both of you have excellent programming skills! Have you considered contributing to the code of some open source projects?
Civil Engineer! My bad, not very good at introducing myself. I also really like programming but mostly lack the skills. I do some basic stuff in C#, hoping to learn more and maybe contribute a bit too.

@Moult Sure! First I need to learn more about the Blender API and IfcOpenShell in my spare time.
Hola comunidad. Soy ingeniero industrial, me dedico a la ingeniería, especialmente a las energías renovables. Llevo año utilizando blender como como herramienta en mi flujo de trabajo y considero que blenderbim es una magnifica herramienta con un enorme campo de aplicación.
Hello everyone!
This juanf from Spain, an architect enthusiast of Open source starting to work with BIM. Very glad to see this amazing community! Thanks a lot for your efforts!
Hi everybody. Im André from Mexico, im an Architectural Engineering Student here in Mexico City, i'm trying to migrate from Archicad to Freecad and i hope i can do it, so far i really like the multiple alternatives we have to other software and i believe the vision of OSArch will help a lot of students and professionals to have more than one way to work. Also i'm part of the "National League of Architecture Students" looking forward to have an event to share the OSArch Vision and hopefully convince colleagues to use open source alternatives.
Hi Everyone , I am an architect and planner from Kerala,India interested in Free and Open Source Culture.
I was using revit for bim and now struggling to shift to open source alternatives. Upgraded one of my computers to Linux, doing 3D modelling in Blender (getting used with BlenderBIM) , 2D drawings in LibreCAD and Inkscape, documentations in LibreOffice etc. I have also developed my own website using python and javascript libraries - https://arunarchitect.in/ . Eventhough I am not an expert am deeply interested in programming . Thanks to @Moult and fellow companions in the community for making me motivated. Enlighten me in the field:)
Hi everyone!
I am a civil engineer with a great interest in programming and automation. I develop programs to optimize project development and coordination. Always looking for new technologies and very excited about the development of IFC.
Hi all,
My name is Valentin (Val for short) and I'm a generalist with the skillset spanning across bridge, civil structures, tunnels, rail and road furniture design, BIM implementation, workflow diagramming, visual scripting and coding.
I've been always interested in open standards and opened ways of working in general. I've started embracing direct iFC authoring about a year ago, initially with GeometryGym Grasshopper Plug-In cause I am most comfortable with that environment. Been putting off getting my hands dirty with BlenderBIM and Sverchok, and finally got a courage this year to start practically using it , initially for iFC models Quality Review and Data Extraction.
Some workflows I'd be interested to explore first:
1. DXF processing and automated conversion to attributed iFC model. I reckon it might be doable with a combination of Sverchok, BlenderBIM and some custom iFC element libraries specific to each discipline (Street Lighting/ Simple road furniture, etc)
2. Procedural Generation of iFC Type Libraries.
3. Structured data reading (json/xml) and automated generation of attributed iFC models.
4. iFC Model review and reporting.
I feel like my journey is only starting and I'm happy to join this vibrant community and hopefully start bringing back some fruits of my discoveries to the industry.
Hi everyone, I am Antonio and I am a building engineer from Italy.
I have read the OSArch community posts for some time and have finally joined. I've been linux user (side-by-side with windows) since 2007 and first came in contact with BlenderBim in 2021/22 while looking for BIM software that would run on linux. I left BBIM for a while and got back in touch with it in 2023. In the last few months I have literally devoured Bimvoice and Dion youtube videos learning a lot about IFC schema and I am currently writing my postgraduate master's thesis on IDS.
My future goals are to start learning programming and go deep into BlenderBIM.
Hi everyone!
My name is Andreas Rudenå from Malmö, Sweden. I'm a software developer and recent startup founder of Paramountric. I worked with IFC programming for 10+ years along with software products from different angles of the built environment such as energy simulation, structural analysis and project collaboration. When I quit my previous job a swore I would never work with IFC again! It's such a pain... However, finding this community and finally trying BlenderBIM (it's awesome), seeing the progress of IFC, IDS, bSDD etc from buildingSMART recent years, I found new hope!! I realise most of the pain is the (non)connection to the proprietary solutions and all the hacks you have to do, and complaints like "it never works with IFC" because of the proprietary first workflows. Open source is the way to go, and different solutions will get more and more stable and change the industry forever when we see the power or true interoperability. I'm at the moment particularly interesting in quantification to LCA and have worked with this the last year or so. Now I'm trying to learn BlenderBIM and how to solve getting m3, m2 and kg out of the model for mapping to smooth life cycle analysis. It's fun!

I think I need to learn more about IfcOpenShell :) I have some improvements for BlenderIFC and hope to push them into the Git.
My current developments are to automate my routine work, like: adding or copying attribute values in the models; creating the folder tree for CDE or S6 stage; dumping the information for S6 stage folders; reporting the status of metainformation (project, site, building, levels, properties) to an XLSX sheet. I'm not sure if they are useful for others.
Currently, I'm working on an IDS-like tool, aimed at managing the IDS more visually, dealing with multiple classification schemes and design stages. Uniclass, Uniformats, ISO 81346, Omniclass, local classificators in the combination with IFC property/quantity sets and OIRs makes me cry. The output is DOCX or XLSX files currently, but I hope it will be possible to use IfcOpenShell to create the correct IDS XML file.
Hello everyone, I am a frontline civil engineering practitioner from China. I'm sorry, my English is not very good. Besides CAD software, I am also a Linux enthusiast. At the same time, I am also quite interested in BIM and programming, although my level is very poor.
Hi everyone!
I work as a BIM Manager in Austria and started using BlenderBIM as a free alternative for my private projects. In the meanwhile BlenderBIM has become also an important tool in my daily work life for analyzing submitted IFCs.
Thanks for all your great work so far!
Hi all, I am new to BIM and I am eager to learn, Can anyone help me understand how to get the quantity of:
• The bricks used for a wall
• The concrete used for a Column, Beam, slab or the structure
• The number of tiles/blocks used for a given surface
• The number of pipes and fixtures used for plumbing, electrical, fire & HVAC
• The length of wires used for electrical work
• The quantity of mortar being used for a wall plaster including the number of cement bags, quantity of plaster sand and quantity of water.
• The quantity of steel used for the given Column, beam, slab or whole structure.
A suggestion of how and where to apply the M15, M20, M30 & M40 grade concrete, additionally the recommended quality of steel to be used as and where applicable according to industry standards would be of great help.

Hi all,
Thanks for everyone contributing to the FOSS.
I'm and architect in Australia. Working with Revit for 13 years, and Revizto for 5 or so, as well as Enscape game engine rendering. All these tools are becoming too expensive and slowing development (not that I pay the bill) and I'm looking forward to replacing them with FOSS alternatives and helping the community and tools grow!
Hi all. I am an architecture student trying to find a "Libre" alternative for BIM .
I used blender but only for my interest in animation, when I entered in my career of architecture I found myself in situation where I needed to use software like AutoCAD and finally I ended up using ArchiCAD, pretty good software but it is closed source and now I can only used it because of the student license. I searched for alternatives and I discovered FreeCAD and BonsaiBIM, I decided to use Bonsai because of my background in Blender
