Hallo an alle!. My name is Pit. I am glad to join this community. The posts and differents contents in this site have helped me to better understand how ifc works and the real posibilities it opens when it is trully understood.
I have a background in architecture and engneering at first developing projects 'on the battle field' many hours of sketching in autocad and Revit and later as manager/coordinator for bim projects.
I am writing you from CH. My actual role has to do with information management in sanitary facilities so understanding ifc is a must to shape the struture of the information and to build applications on top of that. I hope iI can contribute with comments and a bit of code if necessary (.py) as I am a user of blenderbim and ifcopenshell libraries.
Liebe Grusse! Meilleurs salutations! Salutacions! Kind regards to all!

  • Hello! My name is Raphael and I'm from a city called Santos in Brazil. I have a degree in Architecture and Urbanism and have been working with interiors. Recently, I have been studing BIM/IFC and programming inspired by this community to develop a webapp to present and document interior projects.
I would like to share with you what I've been doing. This is still a work in progress, but it's already getting shape. I'm sorry that everything is in portuguese, but I hope you understand.
You can access the app from here:
    And see the code here:
This was modeled with Blender and BlenderBIM and the data to feed the webapp was genereted with a Python script using Ifcopenshell. The webapp was created with React and React three fiber.
Hope you enjoy this as much as I have been enjoying to work whit all those amazing free and open source software! Thanks a lot!

  • Hi everyone, I'm Stephen, I work for the Irish Green Building Council, primarily looking at how we can measure and decarbonise our building stock through retrofit and careful design of newbuild. Really interested in BIM possibilities for making an architect's job easier with this in mind...

  • Welcome @ceegar! It would be great to have you onboard! Open source development is not mutually exclusive with funding. We have been hiring part time development work for the past couple of releases and are scaling that up slowly towards full time. You can see our funding and expenses here: https://opencollective.com/opensourcebim

@raphaelperez hey there! Your webapp seems down right now, it would be great if you could get it running again :)

@StephenBarrett welcome! Perhaps better integrations between OpenLCA and BIM models, more accurate quantity take off, and standardised datasets (i.e. through BOLTS) for the carbon heavy hitters (e.g. standard steel profiles, concrete mixes) would be great to get involved with!

  • Hi @StephenBarrett In my work we have a close working relationship with the NZ Green Building Council. I work in Government social housing kaingaora.govt.nz where our new homes are delivered to an NZGBC 'Homestar' rating. I would like to know more about the Irish experience as it relates to housing. Glad to hear you're on board

Hi @Moult; LCA at the building level is in some ways very simple - a summing of the environmental impacts of the components of the building (standard EN15978) - but when trying to do this before you know who is supplying the components it can be tricky - you need generic data to begin with (like cost estimating before you know your suppliers). I would be interested to know of anyone thinks there is potential in integrating data pulled from the API at https://www.eco-platform.org/epd-data.html into a model? Specifically the A1 to A3 data as this is usually the largest contributor to embodied carbon and other stages in the lifecycle can be handled through national assumptions (this is something I am working on).

  • Hi @Nigel ...we run a certification scheme for housing https://homeperformanceindex.ie/ that we have recently relaunched to make it more in line with the EU Level(s) framework on sustainability https://environment.ec.europa.eu/topics/circular-economy/levels_en . Level(s) is supposed to underpin all EU building legislation going forward, as well as investment evaluation - its a big area and I think Europe is only beginning to realise its significance...

    Nigel
  • @StephenBarrett can you elaborate on what would be involved in this?

I would be interested to know of anyone thinks there is potential in integrating data pulled from the API at https://www.eco-platform.org/epd-data.html into a model?

  • Hi @Moult , sorry I did not see your reply until today. Yes, I note in IFC there are properties that could hold environmental indicator impacts data, which is what the eco-platform holds from EPDs in a digitalised form. If they could be pulled into a model early on then it should be possible to estimate the Whole Life Carbon figure of a building. In the private sector Tally and OneclickLCA both do this with Revit (https://choosetally.com/ , https://www.oneclicklca.com/ , https://www.buildingtransparency.org/tally/tallycat/ free version of Tally but still requires Revit. )

  • I should add that this kind of assessment of building designs is becoming a legal requirement in more and more places - the clearest example is probably Denmark where you have to do this to get a building permit, and they impose a limit of 12kgCO2e/m2/year for building design based on an assumed 50 year useful lifetime.... https://nordicsustainableconstruction.com/news/2023/january/denmark-introduces-co2-limit-for-new-constructions

  • I am a high school teacher. I teach Architectural Drafting. My students are between the ages of 15 and 18. I instruct my students in the use of LibreCad, FreeCad, Autocad, and sometimes Autodesk Inventor and SweetHome3D (but not very much).
I am not a very sophisticated user of CAD programs, and I would like to become so. I would like to learn Blender and FreeCad Arch. I have only really used FreeCad for mechanical types of things, using the Part Design workbench. I'm looking for resources for quickly learning FreeCad Arch and Blender. Thank you!

Hello everyone, I am Pavlos Demetriades and I am Surveying and Geoinformatics engineer and I am working on my diploma thesis with the subject "Investigating the utilization of BIM data for reuse in land management applications". I generated a BIM model using 2d drawing in Revit but lately I discovered BlenderBIM add-on and it gained my curiosity. So, i want to proceed with my BIM modeling, using BlenderBIM add-on. It is a huge chance due to I must learn the fundamentals of IFC and BlenderBIM add-on is modeling native to IFC. A thing that I want to do and I am not sure if it is possible with BlenderBIM add-on is:
Generate IfcSpaces and populated them with Cadastral Informations.

So can someone please tell me if it is possible?

Another thing I want to ask is, I am going to work on a SCAN to BIM project (Academic Project with University). The object which we are going to Scan is a Chappel. So, I was wondering if we could do the BIM modeling process using BlenderBIM add-on and Point Cloud visualizer.
    Thank you

  • Hello everyone,

I'm Sven, I'm a former civil drafter and I mostly do BIM coordination, data validation, change management and a bit of teaching now.
Otherwise, I'm interested in computer stuff, trying to learn how to code and try to spread new innovative stuff that happen in the AEC world through a videopodcast for a few months, also.

Also, I like to cook, happen to drink rum sometimes and I live in Switzerland.

    Cheers,
    Sven

  • Hi, Im a kiwi developer, down-under in Melbourne..
Ive been working on software that takes point clouds and auto-generates a planar mesh .obj 3D model.
You can view a couple of these blender meshes, in browser : https://sketchfab.com/justgord

I'm not a Blender power user, so have a question :
Whats the best way to take a mesh such as these, and make a nice ifc/bim model in Blender ?

    gord.

These are pretty damn good! I've used meshroom, meshlab, zephr, Recap and colmap but none have been this good with blank planar geometry as this!

My personal process at the moment is to bring the whole mesh into blender and then classify it as an IfcProxyElement, unfortunately I would not recommend as this doesn't preserve the textures just yet,

There was someone a few months ago looking at historical documentation and preserving point clouds in IFC that might be helpful for what you are trying to do, this conversation I think:

  • Hello everyone,
I'm Eric, a civil engineering student doing an internship at the Swiss Federal Railways “SBB”. I'm in a development department here and focus on BIM in infrastructure construction. Since the “SBB” is a state-supported company, we are very open to open source solutions in order to ensure that possible working partners have an easy start when working with us. That's how I came across the offers that ifcopenshell and Blender BIM provide and I've already carried out the first tests with ifcopenshell.

    Hi @trabulium ,
I am from Adelaide :). If you have time, also have a look at Sverchok too, since it is the closest you can get from a Rhino-Grasshopper experience. I have made some Sverchok tutorials some years ago for Grasshopper users, you can check it here:

    Hey @Moult
I haven't been to work for a while as I had to do my military service for the year.
Thanks for your offer. At the moment I'm still busy with simple scripts that extract attribute information from the ifc files. I have already found some examples here in the forum. But if I really get stuck I'll let you know.

  • Hello - nice to meet everyone. I am currently working on my Masters of Information and Data Science from UC-Berekely. I am in my final semester and have been lurking around the community for the past two months. Looking to connect with members to help us in building an ifc data set in the hopes of automating plan checking in California. No architecture experience, but looking for ways to use data science to improve the industry.

  • Welcome @slavingia ! A lot of Blender developers make their income through Gumroad!

Welcome @memoryofaboy ! It would be great to bring in some local knowledge about building standards and conventions in Thailand.

Welcome @rjwdata ! Sounds like you're in for a ride! The industry is generally pretty behind when it comes to clean datasets, but hopefully you'll find the cutting edge developments here in OSArch.

  • Hello All!!
I'm exited to be here. I'm an architect from Mexico, trying to move my BIM workflows outside propietary-software and explore other ways of working with IFC.

  • Having been tracking the community for a while now. And think better to join to learn more from everyone.

I am from a different industry - Wireless Network Design and Optimisation (e.g. 5G, 4G mobile networks and WiFi, including base stations, APs, antennas etc.). As you can imagine, the network design will happen in indoor as well as outdoor environments. For the moment, all of the design file formats are either proprietary or non-industry standard (same for my company).

It is good to see if we can move/migrate the format to IFC and alike formats so that wireless network designs can be also freely opened and assessed by Open source software.

In addition, I am also interested to see how we can contribute to the IFC standard to define wireless network components in a professional way (e.g. antenna radiating patterns, material RF losses e.g. permittivity, conductivity etc.).

The last part is database model in the cloud, as Moult (i have learnt a lot from you, thanks) mentioned, IFC may not be the best format to support cloud-native application developments. To find an efficient data model that can be efficiently queried and freely exchanged between IFC format will be excellent.
